Aalborg is an industrial and university city, located in the Jutland province of northern Denmark. It is famous throughout Europe for its student life, well known to all participants of the Erasmus programme! The lively city of Aalborg won the Europe Prize in 1988 for its particularly active involvement in the promotion of the “European ideal”. This city of around 120,000 inhabitants is built on the banks of a fjord which, for a long time has owed its wealth to the commercial port based there. And more than anywhere else in Denmark, nature is omnipresent. Concerned for the environment, the Danish consider Aalborg as the most environmentally-friendly city in the country. Parks, nearby forests, the seafront, here everything is about making the most of nature.
A must see is the most famous street in town, where Aalborg’s social life starts and finishes, Jomfru Ane Gade, or as students call it “The street” (“Gaden”). Lined with pubs and restaurants, it’s the pulse of the city. Packed on the weekends, this lively street is full of “Happy hours” and the price of beer can vary by up to four fold, depending on the time and how full the bars are!
Visit the Museum of Modern Art, designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Set in a large wooded park, its natural light emphasizes the works of the Cobra movement painters including several canvasses by Asger Jorn and Ejler Bille. Cobra is the combination of CO for Copenhagen, BR for Brussels and A for Amsterdam. This artistic movement began in 1948 and principally grouped together Danish artists as well as a few French and Swedish. Their abstract works are known worldwide. Also, don’t miss the works of Alechinsky and Poliakoff.

Discover the 17th century architecture of Aalborg Castle by the port. Built as a symbol of Copenhagen’s power, to demonstrate its strength to peasants in the north, the fortress cannot be visited and with good reason: it is still the prefecture of North-Jutland and therefore remains an administrative centre. However you can enter the court and admire the traditional Flemish style façades, with hooks at the front of the windows under the roof tops, to lift up provisions to the lofts. You can visit the park, the dungeon and the cellars during the week from 8am to 3pm. In the bunkers, panels show the history of the castle.
Leave Aalborg and cross the fjord to go to Lindholm Høje, a Viking necropolis and museum located in the north of the city. The cemetery has no less than 700 tombs and the traces of a large city abandoned by the Vikings around the 11th century. These vestiges, swept away by the wind and covered in sand, were only discovered in 1952. A small museum has been opened on the site to exhibit pottery and jewellery and explain Viking rituals. The museum café has a terrace offering a beautiful view of the region (Vendilavej 11. Nørresundby).
Admire Jens Bangs Stenhus (the house of Jens Bang) designed by this rich merchant to impress his neighbours with its elegance. Built in 1624 out of bricks, it dominates the other houses in the area with its 5 floors and gargoyle style decorations which are caricatures of the former proprietor’s enemies! The ground floor houses one of the oldest pharmacies in the city and the cellar has a restaurant called "Duus Binkjaelder". The rest of the building is private (Østerågade 9 à Aalborg).
